Park Guide internships offer skills for college and beyond, including research, resource conservation, and public speaking. Duties include:
researching, developing, and presenting four different thematic cave tours;
staffing the visitor center information desk ;
offering information and orientation services in informal settings such as parking lots and outdoor terraces, and;
assisting with special projects.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop skills needed for college and beyond. Park Guide Interns will learn computer skills such as PowerPoint, create and write interpretive programs, hone research skills, and practice public speaking and leadership skills. These positions interact with people from around the country and the world and will be part of a staff of over twenty people.
Experience in interpretation, public speaking, environmental education, or caves is helpful, but not required. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
Location & Benefits
Wind Cave National Park is located in southwest South Dakota and is home to the 5th longest cave in the world. Bison, elk, prairie dogs, birds, and more roam 33,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest.
All housing is provided by Wind Cave at no cost to the intern. Housing consists of shared, furnished apartments or houses with kitchens and baths located minutes from work. A $75 cost of living allowance is provided each week. Up to $150 in expenses are reimbursed for travel to and from the park at the beginning and end of the season ($300 total). Uniforms are provided. Personal transportation is desirable, but not essential.
