Benefits to the volunteer:
Share your love of history with National Park visitors. Food is provided from Friday evening dinner through breakfast on Sunday. Small arms rounds will be provided along with powder for artillery rounds. The park will pay for your ferry transportation and mileage at the going IRS volunteer rate of $0.14 a mile.
Goal or outcome of the job:
This year to Commemorate the 205th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie we want to honor the US Military through the years. This includes pre-War of 1812 through the Modern Day military. British and Canadian units from those time periods are also welcome to participate.
Historic Weekend 2018 will take place September 7-9. Volunteers
Volunteer will provide historic weapons firing demonstrations in period dress. Demonstrations will include artillery, small arms, or both. Most of the demonstrations will occur weekly: Friday-Sunday. After gaining park knowledge, volunteer may take more of a leading role in the demonstration including conducting the interpretive talk. Historic weapons programs will help visitors to reach an emotional and intellectual connection to park resources.
Costumed interpreters must enjoy working with park visitors, be able to remain calm and courteous during busy times and emergencies, communicate effectively with the public and with park staff. Knowledge of the time period they portray. Firing demonstrations will be limited to flintlock muskets and 18/early 19th century artillery. Other time periods can bring weapons but they will not be able to fire. Firing demonstrators need to be at least 16 years of age.
Most work will be outdoors. Volunteers should in good physical condition and capable of standing or walking outdoors in hot or cold weather. Historic clothing may not be comfortable in all weather.
