VIPS will reside on site and are provided with an RV pad and utilities for an 8 week commitment, dates are flexible. They will work approximately 32 hours per week per person. A personal vehicle or bicycle will be needed for transport to and from duty station in the Cable Mill area of Cades Cove which is approximately 6 miles from the provided RV Pad. VIPS will provide formal Cultural and Natural History interpretive programs, swear in Junior Rangers, answer questions and provide orientation to park visitors, assist park rangers with emergency situations and manage traffic as it is encountered due to wildlife, but not as a primary duty.
Cades Cove is a district within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is 11 miles south of Townsend, TN and 45 Miles south of Knoxville, TN. It is the most visited area of the Smokies in the most visited National Park in the country. It's popular due to its breathtaking views, wildlife viewing and rich cultural history. What to Expect in Cades Cove
Cades cove is gorgeous, and accessible by car almost everywhere, which is partly why it receives almost 3 million visitors per year. This means on a daily basis you will encounter visitors disregarding park rules. Patience and professionalism are keys to your success as a volunteer in this special place.
There is no Cell service, internet or TV available at the RV pad. A land line and internet will be available to you at the Interpretation and Visitor Services office a 2 minute walk from the RV pad.
American Black bears are awesome, and they live here and will likely be seen if not daily at least weekly. They mind their business, but it's just good to know they're there.
