The Bighorn National Forest is currently seeking volunteers on the Medicine Wheel Ranger District in the scenic Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.
Volunteers are needed for five 8-hour days per week while serving. This includes weekends, since these tend to be our busiest days. Housing will be provided (either your camper, our camper, or a cabin). Volunteers will provide support for the recreation program in its daily operations and maintenance of Forest Service recreation sites and infrastructure. The selected individual will receive $28 reimbursement for each day of service, unless they are local and can return home every evening. The opportunity starts at 8 AM on Monday, May 21, 2018.
Duties may include:
Facility / Grounds Maintenance: Removing trash, stocking bathrooms, and interacting with Forest visitors at Forest Service campgrounds and dispersed recreation sites.
Assisting in visitor information services at Shell Falls Visitor Center and occasionally at the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark
Possible additional support to other Forest Service program areas could include archaeology, wildlife biology, rangeland management, etc., as needed. These are not a guarantee, nor are they required duties for the volunteer opportunity.
Housing will be provided (either a trailerpad with hook-ups, camper, or cabin depending on volunteer needs). These spots are located at the Shell Ranger Station and the trailer spots with water and sewer are located in an aspen stand with a small creek nearby.
This is a remote location. No cellular service is available. WiFi is available at the Shell Ranger Station, but use is limited to such activities as email, checking the weather, viewing websites, etc. Streaming, downloading, and other activities requiring large amounts of data are prohibited.
We hope to find volunteers who can stay the entire season, as it is difficult to train new staff mid-season when things are very busy. We may be able to flex beginning or end dates by a week or two at most.
The site is located ~3 hours from Yellowstone National Park, ~4 hours from the Black Hills, and ~5 hours from Grand Teton National Park.
The area is surrounded by vast tracts of National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and State of Wyoming public lands, providing abundant opportunities for fishing, hiking, mountain biking, ATV/OHV use, camping, horseback riding, shooting, photography, rockhounding, etc.
The nearest services can be found ~50 minutes away in Greybull, with additional services available at greater distances in Lovell, Powell, Sheridan, and Cody.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Other Description: Bunkhouse facilities, cabins, or camper may be available. Also RV pad with utility hook ups next to a small creek are available, depending on volunteer needs.
