The Conasauga Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest in northwest Georgia is seeking a volunteer to serve as campground host May 1 through October 15, 2018. The host would be provided with a site at the Pocket Campground in the beautiful Armuchee Valley of the Southern Appalachians near Dalton, Georgia. The host site is suitable for the host's own trailer or recreation vehicle (RV) up to 30 feet in length, and offers electricity and sewer service. There is no internet service or cell service, though a phone is available for emergency use.
The Pocket Campground is located on an old CCC camp site, with a meandering creek and functioning spring running through it. The 27 campsites are all non-electric (with the exception of the host site) and share one flush toilet facility. Sites are available on a first-come, first served basis only. There are multiple potable water spigots throughout the campground, but no showers. There is also an associated Day Use Area with picnic tables, pedestal grills, vault toilet and covered shelter (reservable) which is often quite busy as it provides access to the creek and has a shallow, somewhat developed wading area that is popular spot to cool down in in the summer. There is also a three mile easy loop trail that begins and ends in the campground/day use area.
Duties of the Host are to greet campers, provide information and assistance if needed, and clean campsites when a camper leaves (pick up litter, clean fire rings and picnic tables, etc.). Host will also routinely check and clean restroom facilities to help ensure adequate paper product supplies and adherence to health and safety standards, and check chlorine levels of the source water. Assisting the USFS personnel with routine grounds-keeping tasks such as mowing and weed eating may occasionally be required.
The Host should have good people skills and be responsible and neat in appearance. The Host must be physically able to perform such tasks as raking, shoveling, mopping and sweeping, weed-eating, performing minor maintenance, inspecting the campground, keeping simple maintenance records, monitoring area use, and occasionally filling out forms.
Host will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions. Any vandalism or other problems should be reported to Forest Service personnel. All necessary tools, supplies, and safety equipment will be provided by the Forest Service, along with appropriate training. The host should be in the campground and available to the public 5 days out of each week, plus holidays, per their volunteer agreement. Days typically needing coverage are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Service hours are 8 am to 5 pm, but Hosts may be called upon 24 hours/day if needed.
