We have a rare last-minute volunteer position available at Pahranagat!
A volunteer is needed for April and May 2018.
Pahranagat is an oasis in the Mojave with year-round water, beautiful springtime blossoms, and hundreds of species of birds that flock through during their migrations. It is a haven for hiking, biking, boating, hunting, and fishing. As a volunteer you can be part of a small, friendly Refuge team helping to staff our new visitor center and provide visitor services throughout the refuge.
Help is needed weekends and weekdays at the visitor center and campgrounds. As a visitor center host, you would provide orientation and interpretation to refuge visitors, answering questions in person and over the phone. You would cover topics regarding the refuge, local natural and cultural resources, safety precautions, rules and regulations, recreational opportunities, and area services.
You would also assist staff in maintaining our campgrounds by cleaning bathrooms, emptying trash containers, picking up litter, and other maintenance and visitor facility projects within your abilities. If you are interested, there are also possiblities to conduct structured programs for refuge visitors.
Pahranagat was established in 1963 as a stopover site for migratory birds. Spring is a wonderful time to be here! You will see dozens of bird species building up their strength at this desert oasis before continuing their journey north. We have guidebooks, spotting scopes, and binoculars available for volunteer use. Spend some time here and get to know our wonderful wildlife!
Pahranagat NWR is located about 90 minutes northeast of Las Vegas, NV. Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Great Basin, and Death Valley National Parks are all about a half day's drive.
RV or motor home utility hook-ups for electric, water, and sewage are available. Propane is also provided. We can also offer lodging in the refuge bunkhouse to potential volunteers who do not have RVs. The commitment requires 24 hours/week of volunteer work per resident. Exact start and end dates are negotiable, but we'd like someone to start in early April and stay through May if possible.
If desired, we also have a room available at Pahranagat's bunkhouse for our spring volunteer. The house is fully furnished and heated and air conditioned. It has a washer/dryer, two bathrooms, and a full-size stove.
When applying, please provide contact information for three references. Two references should be professional. If applying as couple, please provide both applicant names.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Bunk House Description: RV hookups (Water, sewer, electric, and propane) are provided. If desired, we also have 3 rooms available in the large, clean, air-conditioned, fully-furnished bunkhouse. Volunteers must work for 28 hours a week in exchange for use of the house.
