The Eastern Divide Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest is looking for volunteers to serve as Hosts at White Rocks Campground in 2018.
White Rocks Campground contains: 35 camp sites, potable water (ten water faucets are located throughout the campground), flush toilets and sinks (in three different bathrooms), picnic tables, and lantern posts. No electrical hookups are available except at the Host site. Recreation Technicians from our District Office routinely interact with the Campground Host to provide oversight, tools and necessary supplies.
This campground is a wonderful place for those who enjoy a natural setting and do not need a lot of amenities. It is located in the midst of a typical Appalachian forest and has White Rocks Creek which meanders alongside several of the sites. This is a low visitor use campground but is truly a beautiful place. The campground is located in Giles County, near the border of West Virginia east of State Route 635.
Local Amenities: The nearest full-service community is the town of Pearisburg, Virginia, which is about 18 miles away. The Appalachian Trail crosses State Route 635 south of campground. Paintbank, Virginia is north of the campground about 17 miles and has a gas station, restaurant, and general store. As you head toward Paintbank from the campground, you pass a large privately owned buffalo farm.
Host Duties: The Host would serve as the campground contact by answering questions, providing directions, offering help in time of emergency by calling our Law Enforcement Officer, and performing light maintenance. This maintenance includes litter pickup, cleaning bathrooms, restocking fee envelope and toilet paper etc.
In exchange for your valuable volunteer service, we will provide you with a campsite with water/electric/waste hookup.
For scheduling purposes, we ask for at least a month of commitment. In exchange for a free campsite and utilities, we ask our volunteers to help out at least 4 hours per day, 5 days a week. Higher use times are weekends and holidays. Schedule of hours per day and days per week is flexible and can be discussed with Recreation Program Manager here on the district.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Camp Sites Description: Host camp site includes water/electrical hookups, waste disposal, picnic table, and lantern post.
