Like adventure? Don't mind a little hard work? Be a VOLUNTEER TRAIL CREW INTERN and work side-by-side with U.S. Forest Service trails employees in the backcountry mountains of northern Colorado!
Use various tools and equipment to maintain and construct trails, install waterbars, and/or build rock walls.
Monitor, identify and report on trail and campsite conditions and problems.
Patrol trails and interact with forest visitors.
May explain forest rules and regulations upon completion of proper training.
May camp out overnight in the backcountry.
The work requires physical exertion including long periods of walking or standing. May require bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, lifting, and carrying generally up to 50 pounds. Elevations range from around 6,000 to almost 13,000 feet.
Trailwork and patrol occurs in a forest environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, and covered with thick and tangled vegetation. Temperatures may range from very hot and dry to cool and extremely wet. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. Work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, and hardhats.
Interns will receive basic trail maintenance skills training, first aid/CPR, forest regulation information, and a defensive driving course so they can drive a government vehicle.
DESIRED SKILLS : Desired or Ability to Learn
Basic knowledge in forest trail standards of operation and maintenance to perform a variety of assignments in support of the unit recreation/wilderness programs.
Ability to effectively meet and interact with co-workers and Forest visitors.
Skill in the use of: hand tools (crosscut saw, adze, axes, rockbar); power tools (rock drill and chainsaw); and such modes of transportation required on the unit i.e. ATV, motorcycle, stock, hiking, etc.
Knowledge of basic first aid/CPR.
Valid state-issued drivers license.
Weekly work schedule is four, 10-hour days, including weekends. There may be some backpacking and overnight camping in the wilderness.
PLEASE NOTE: NO HOUSING IS AVAILABLE FOR THIS POSITION. Applicant will need to provide in-town housing or accomodations for most of the season.
