Fire Education volunteers will help run our “Every Kid in the Park” program for 4th graders. This program is a nationwide effort to get people outdoors. The volunteer will be going to several schools to give a presentations about fire prevention and other responsible recreation subjects along with other Forest Service employees/volunteers. At the end of the presentation, each 4th grader will receive an annual pass to help encourage them to visit their federal lands. The volunteer may also assist with being Smokey Bear or his handler.
There is room for program creation and implementation if a volunteer has a background in a specific field. The intent is to teach the class about the Forest Service and local recreation opportunities. The possible presentation subjects are pack in pack out, how to choose a proper campfire locations, how to extinguish a campfire (Smokey’s Rules) and how to ensure it is properly extinguished.
Be a U.S. citizen and provide a permanent mailing address.
Pass a background check and possess a valid state driver’s license.
This volunteer should be good with large groups of children ages 9-10 years old
Volunteers maintain a positive and helpful attitude program attendees and other volunteers that you may be assigned to work with.
Provide a professional reference to verify experience.
Represent the Forest Service to the public in a respectful manner.
Volunteers accept full responsibility for personal actions and any inappropriate behavior unbecoming to a Forest Service volunteer.
Have excellent communication skills
Provide a positive experience to program attendees
Have a confident presence and represent the Forest Service
Provide assistance to volunteers in the field.
Communicate with Forest Service staff and volunteer groups or individuals
Volunteers have the responsibility of representing the Forest Service in carrying out the mission “Caring for the Land and Serving People”.
Volunteers will be briefed on relevant Forest Service policies and will be included in formal and other specialized training sessions (when available) at District Offices. Volunteers must attend all mandatory safety trainings related to their volunteer position.
