Major Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for winter operations of the Exit Glacier (EG) Area in Kenai Fjords NP.
Establishes a winter residence at the Alder Cabin and maintains the area as a clean, safe, and livable site. Conducts patrols on foot, snowshoes, skis, snow machines, snow bike, and 4WD vehicles in the EG Area. Makes presence known to users and provides interpretive, educational, regulatory and safety information of the area.
Notifies Law Enforcement staff of any violations occurring in the EG area, and follows emergency contact procedures. Documents information about regulation violations and significant human impacts.
Following area protocols, performs snow removal on and around area buildings using shovels, snow-blower, and other equipment. Monitors buildings and facilities at EG and updates the Maintenance Division of problems. Maintains good condition of Alder Cabin and one other Public Use Cabin and updates the bulletin board in the cabin as needed. Contacts cabin users, provides orientation if needed, and assists with any problems.
Places and maintains regulatory signs at appropriate locations. Creates an inventory and map of winter sign locations.
Collects and enters detailed winter use statistics, including Voluntary Backcountry Registration (VBR), Backcountry Contact Data, Monthly Public Use Reports (MPUR), daily weather, and monthly snow surveys. Documents possible travel/camping hazards in the area, including snow, avalanche, and road condition reports, and advises park headquarters personnel.
Assists Area Rangers with various projects as assigned. Participates in various local training opportunities when available. Performs all tasks with awareness of job hazards and how to mitigate them.
Qualifications: Ability to work safely in a remote environment
Working knowledge of local area and equipment.
Time Commitment: Varies from year to year, but generally starts sometime between October and December and ends March 30, 2019.
Hours per day/week/pay-period: 32 hours/week
Training Provided: Emergency Medical Services (EMS)/ Search and Rescue (SAR) if available, snow machine operations.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Cabins Description: Alder Cabin at Exit Glacier Area. 1 Bedroom, 1 bath, fully furnished, wood burning stove, no electricity, dry cabin, outhouse. When not at Alder Cabin, a fully furnished apartment with modern amenities is provided in town.
