Zion operates two different campgrounds. Hosts at Watchman Campground assist park rangers in the running of the campground; Watchman is reservable up to six months in advance. South Campground was recently put on a reservation system and can be reserved two weeks in advance; South Campground does not have a full-time ranger present.
There are multiple slots to be filled. South Campground: March/April 2019, May/June 2019, July/Aug 2019, Sept/Oct/Nov 2019. Watchman Campground: Mar/Apr/May 2019, June/July/August 2019, Sept/Oct/Nov 2019. Please indicate which months you are available on your application.
Campground hosts provide a valuable point of contact for visitors staying in park campgrounds. Campground hosts are official representatives of the National Park Service and are required to wear the NPS park volunteer uniform while on duty. Campground host duties include, but are not limited to:
• Roving the campground throughout the day between 7:00 am – 9:00 pm
• Assist campers finding campsites and/or reminding them about checkout times
• Educating visitors on campground regulations
• Removal of camping tags
• Provide a variety of visitor information on the shuttle system, Jr Ranger program, Ranger programs, backcountry permits, hiking and/or other activities within the park.
Requirements: Possess a valid driver’s license, ability to work independently, ability to provide good communication and customer service to domestic and international visitors of all backgrounds and abilities, possess own RV/motor home.
Desired: Previous experience working with visitors/customers, ability to multi-task, knowledgeable about RV lifestyles, various styles of RV/motor homes, familiarity with campgrounds
Zion's campgrounds are large and busy, but have beautiful views. Hosts are very much appreciated by park staff.
Summer weather conditions in the desert include extreme temperatures (105+ degrees), direct sun with little shade, and inclement conditions during the monsoon season including rain, lightning, and flash flooding. "Shoulder" season mornings start chilly, but warm up quickly when the sun comes over the canyon walls. Average daily lows in the winter months hover around 30 degrees.
