Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve is seeking a friendly, organized and highly motivated person to assist the Branch of Facility Management with general sanitation and custodial duties, some general maintenance duties, and simple, basic water operations. Volunteer will be responsible for sanitation and custodial duties in high visitor use areas such as the dunes parking area and picnic areas for the Branch Chief of Facility Management. The volunteer will also assist park staff with water operations and light maintenance duties that enhance the campground, picnic areas, office areas, and buildings and utilities of the park.
The position will have the opportunity to provide service to the largest operation at Great Sand Dunes ensuring a smooth and efficient operation is maintained. The Branch Chief and Buildings and Utilities Supervisors will provide on-site and off-site training to carry out duties and responsibilities. Other special projects will be given as they come available. The position provides professional development opportunities for an individual interested in learning more about the important duties and tasks that are needed to keep visitors safe and healthy for an enjoyable visit to the tallest dunes in North America.
Skills: Volunteer must have experience with basic custodial work. The volunteer must be courteous and have a professional demeanor and be an independent worker. Must be willing to learn and be open to coaching and feedback.
Working conditions: Requires standing/walking for extended periods in outdoor and indoor settings. Volunteer must be able to lift 25-pounds, use a mop, wash windows, kneel, stoop, and stretch in the course of performing duties.
Time commitment: This position requires 32-40 hours per week for an individual.
Additional comments: This is a uniformed position. The park will issue shirts, jackets, and baseball caps to be returned at the end of the season. Due to remoteness, reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license are required. You must complete the application on the volunteer website (and) send a resume. Once the incumbent is hired, a background check will be required for all volunteers with unrestricted access to a government building, to access a government computer that’s connected to the network. While the background check is being completed, the incumbent will be accompanied by a NPS staff member at all times. Reimbursement for mileage within a 50-mile radius is provided.
