Enjoy the beauty of autumn in the Blue Ridge Mountains while helping visitors connect to the beauty which surrounds them.
Provide visitor information and perform sales at Rocky Knob Visitor Center. This position serves as a front-line representative of the National Park Service in a visitor center setting. As a representative of the National Park Service, volunteer must support the missions of the Service, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Plateau District. The volunteer will use his/her skills to enhance the visitors’ experiences at the Blue Ridge Parkway. This position, works either independently or alongside park rangers, park partners or volunteers (after on-the-job training, from both Eastern and local park personnel) to open and close visitor centers, transact sales, replenish merchandise displays and complete financial duties.
Volunteer is responsible for determining visitors’ needs and providing accurate orientation and information to park visitors. This may include trip planning, trail information, site orientation, rules and regulations, regional information, and natural and cultural history. Volunteer must follow emergency procedures and adhere to park guidelines and explain regulations to visitors in a positive and educational manner. Volunteer must be able to maintain enthusiasm when answering repetitive questions.
° Position requires standing and talking for extended periods of time along with walking, hiking and occasional lifting.
° Volunteers will be expected to commit to volunteering 32 hours per week.
° Must enjoy working with the public.
° Wearing a volunteer uniform is required.
Setting: Floyd, VA is a small town with several stores, banks and restaurants. The Town of Floyd is becoming known as a regional destination for music, especially bluegrass music, and old-time music.
Transportation: Personal transportation is required as it is several miles to get to local stores outside of the park. There is no public transportation.
Medical Facilities: The local medical center provides basic treatment. The nearest hospital is one hour away.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Trailer/RV Pads Description: Volunteer RV hook-ups within the park which include electric, water and sewer in exchange for commitment of 32 hrs per week for 13 weeks (May-July and August – October).
