Interpretation and Visitor Services Volunteer
Great Sand Dunes is seeking friendly, motivated people from the local community to assist our park operations and visitor experiences. If you're able to assist one day a month or a few days a week, or even just one season out of the year, please apply!
The individual(s) would assist park staff during the peak visitation season. Duties may include: provide customer service at a visitor center desk for 4-5 hours; manage the park’s Junior Ranger Program by distributing Junior Ranger activity books, review the books, and provide badges or patches upon completion; monitor and answer the visitor center phone and radio; maintain interpretive and informational handouts. Other optional duties including roving/ hiking the parks trails and dune fields, provide 1-2 hours of informal interpretation at high visitor use areas, support off-site or on-site park events, and/ or provide formal interpretation at the visitor center. Additional duties include, processing and safeguarding lost and found items in accordance with park policies, distributing and receiving park and local community information, responding to park inquiries via email or mail, and reporting law enforcement, safety, and maintenance issues to appropriate staff. Most of these duties are performed indoors at high elevations but some require work under hot and cold temperatures, and outdoor environmental factors – wind, heat. The park elevation is 8200'.
A background investigation may be required if volunteer(s) will have access to government buildings and property unaccompanied by paid staff.
