This position is part of a partnership between the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and the Arizona Natural History Association (ANHA). The volunteer(s) will work Thursday through Sunday (32 hours/week) as the primary representative for ANHA and will assist Forest Service employees in the daily operations of the Mogollon Rim Visitor Information Station. Duties include, but are not limited to: managing sales and inventory, operating a cash register and Point Of Sale System for the sale of ANHA products, and preparing ANHA deposits; talking to visitors and answering questions about the local area; providing information about recreation opportunities on the forest; and educating visitors on fire safety and Leave No Trace principles. Additional duties may include light maintenance such as picking up trash, interior cleaning and maintaining displays within the visitor center.
Training and a district orientation will be provided. Shifts are 8 hours long, which includes travel time from the Black Mesa Ranger District office to the visitor’s center each day - actual time at the visitor center is approximately 6 hours daily. A minimum commitment from mid-May through Labor Day Weekend is preferred. Candidates must possess a valid state driver’s license and a clean driving record. A federal background check with fingerprints will be conducted upon award of the position. Please include three references (with phone numbers) in section 19 of the application. References should be unrelated to you and able to speak about your ability and/or aptitude for the position.
An RV pad and utilities is provided at the Black Mesa Ranger Station in Overgaard, AZ . Volunteering couples are preferred, but not required. A minimum of one Visitors Center position is available. Other volunteer positions exist on the district. If couples both wish to volunteer an application must be completed for EACH person. Transportation to and from the district office to the visitor center will be provided and counted as volunteer hours.
The volunteer must present a neat, professional appearance and wear appropriate uniform components and a name plate, which will be provided at no cost, while working in the public eye and on official duty. The volunteer(s) will be trained in Forest Service Safety and Customer Service procedures.
Required skills and abilities:
Read and speak English well
Good communication skills with customers and co-workers
Positive, helpful, approachable, and friendly attitude
Basic familiarity with natural resources and ecology
A neat, professional appearance
Standing and/or sitting for long periods
Ability to live and work at elevations above 7,000’
A valid driver’s license and good driving record
Other helpful (not required) skills and abilities:
Area familiarity (especially in the areas of recreation, forestry, flora, fauna, geology and local services)
Familiar with the Leave No Trace Program
Multiple volunteer positions are available on the district. All positions require people who are self-motivated, have a strong work ethic, and the ability to work in teams of 2 or more people.
Volunteers must possess their own self-contained recreational vehicle or trailer or otherwise provide their own housing. The program allows for pairs and singles to work for a minimum of 3-1/2 months up to a maximum of 7 months for free RV space with utilities (water, sewer, and electric) located on the Black Mesa Ranger District administrative site in Overgaard, Arizona. A government vehicle will be provided for transportation to and from the visitor center, which is located approximately 25 miles west of the district office.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Trailer/RV Pads Description: Volunteer must provide their own self-contained RV/Fifth-wheel/Camper. The program allows for pairs or singles to work for a minimum of 3-½ months up to a maximum of 7 months for an RV site with free utilities (water, sewer, electric). Singles in a site must work a minimum of 32 hours per week and volunteering pairs at a site must work a minimum of 48 hours per week.
