The Fall River Ranger District, Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands is seeking one or two enthusiastic volunteers to provide visitor services to the general public during the 2019 season. This position is located at the district office in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The ideal candidate(s) enjoys working with the public and is passionate about our National Forests and Grasslands. Days typically needing coverage are Monday – Friday with service hours from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
The grasslands are rich with history and hold some of the nation’s most intriguing treasures. The district encompasses over 300,000 acres offering diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities.
Once home to expansive herds of bison, the grasslands provides opportunities like no other. Explore the badlands or cool your feet in the Cheyenne River while listening to the rustle of the cottonwood leaves. Search for agates in one of the many agate beds. Fish a grassland pond or view the numerous bird species who call the grasslands home.
Duties Include: Greeting visitors and answering questions. Inventory and product display of Black Hills Parks and Forest Association merchandise. Answering phones and directing calls when needed. Opportunities to enjoy the grasslands assisting specialist with field work may be available if so desired but not required. These would include projects such as recreation site maintenance, picking up litter, cleaning fire rings, mowing at sites. Assisting with sign maintenance and installation, wildlife inventory and surveys. All equipment and personal protective equipment will be provided as well as any specialized and safety training needed for project implementation.
The District Office is located in the southern Black Hills, considered a recreational mecca for many, and only minutes from many of the area attractions including Mt. Rushmore. This opportunity is ideal for a retired person or couple, or anybody who wishes to spend their summer interacting with visitors from all over the world, while helping sustain and promote one of our nation’s greatest treasures, our amazing public lands.
