Come out and volunteer at Prince William Park!
Park: Prince William Forest Park is a 15,000+ acre park preserving a variety of natural and cultural history within 35 miles of Washington, D.C. The park has 37 miles of hiking trails, over 21 miles of bicycle accessible roads and trails, numerous campgrounds and numerous cultural opportunities varying from CCC cabins to the OSS.
Length of Hosting: Minimum of 2 months.
This position requires hosts to volunteer a minimum of 32 hours per week and may include rotating shifts, nights, holidays, weekends. A flexible work schedule will be developed and approved by the appropriate Supervisor.
Duties: Typical duties include custodial duties in public areas: Stock toilet paper, remove trash/litter, clean mirrors, fill soap dispensers, wipe down sinks and toilets, sweep and mop floors. Minor repairs to structures as assigned (repairing loose boards, broken batten repair, painting, staining, tightening loose hinges, picnic table repair or fabrication, fence repair, trail work)etc.). Working alongside maintenance staff as a helper as assigned. Litter pickup, mowing, trimming, gardening, pruning, weeding, mulching, splitting firewood and stacking; cleaning ash/debris from campfire & picnic grills, leaf removal (raking and leaf blowers) and snow removal from walk-ways. Operates Government radios and vehicles (a valid state driver’s license is required to operate Government vehicles), appropriately and professionally. Volunteers will take mandatory ATV/EV training and safety training. Document/record Volunteer hours performed on daily/monthly logs, and submit to appropriate Supervisor and volunteer coordinator at the end of each month. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the mission of the NPS and Prince William Forest Park, and visitors. As a maintenance volunteer, direction and supervision will be provided primarily by the Roads and Trails Supervisor and/or the Building and Utilities Supervisor (depending on daily your assignment). Works with minimal Supervision.
Skills: Must have a valid driver license. Organizational, people friendly attitude, willingness to work in a rural, rustic outdoor environment. Ability to work with hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and hammers.
Compensation: Free RV hook-ups provided.
Area: The area has many other national parks varying from George Washington birthplace to the Civil War sites of Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania. Not to mention Washington DC only 35 miles away.
