Job Title: Wilderness Desk / Trailhead Volunteer
Supervisor: Kings Canyon Supervisory Park Ranger
Goal: To provide backpacking information to visitors and protect the park wilderness.
Location & Dates: Grant Grove Visitor Center, Kings Canyon National Park, May 20 to September 5 (Dates are flexible) Please note, this position does not provide housing and candidates need to live within commuting distance of the Grant Grove area to be considered.
Issue wilderness permits and collect fees.
Educate park visitors on Leave-No-Trace and wilderness ethics.
Educate park visitors on safely traveling in bear country.
Assist park visitors with trip planning.
Educate stock users on current regulations.
Actively participate in training opportunities provided.
Complete other duties or tasks as may be mutually agreed upon.
Qualifications:We are looking for a volunteer who has an interest in wilderness and hiking, and who likes to work with the public. Some backpacking and hiking skills are beneficial in disseminating appropriate information to visitors. Local knowledge of the area is also beneficial. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently are essential.

Training: Volunteer will receive orientation and training in wilderness operations, radio communications, safe food storage, bear management and other topics.
Working Conditions: The volunteer in this position will work at least one 8 hour shift per week. Volunteer uniforms will be provided. The volunteer will be under a surety bond and trained in the sale of permits and the collection of fees. THERE IS NO HOUSING AVAILABLE FOR THIS POSITION.
Area: This position is located in the Grant Grove area of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The volunteer will work in the Grant Grove Visitor Center.The city of Fresno is a one hour drive from Grant Grove.
