This internship supports National Park Service (NPS) staff in the management of natural resources in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The intern works under the guidance of the park’s stewardship ecologist for NPS lands in San Francisco, including the coastal areas of the Presidio, Land’s End, and Fort Funston. Habitat restoration in the GGNRA is a partnership between the National Park Service, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and Presidio Trust.
San Francisco’s dunes, grasslands, coastal scrub, and wetlands are home to rare and endangered plant and wildlife species. Habitat restoration projects are completed through the support of community volunteers. Responsibilities include: controlling invasive plants and revegetating with native plant species; coordinating weekly volunteer programs and service projects for adult and youth groups; managing a stewardship site in San Francisco and maintaining program tools, facilities, and equipment; conducting adaptive management and monitoring activities; and sharing concepts of ecological restoration, biodiversity, invasive species, and conservation biology with the public. The position is field-based and involves physically challenging work using a variety of hand and power tools. The work is often conducted in inclement weather conditions and over rough terrain. Interns work 40 hours per week. The schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Park housing is provided, when available, to non-local applicants.
Professional interest in natural resource stewardship and an enthusiasm for rigorous outdoor work in all types of site and weather conditions.
Good organizational skills and independent time management.
Enthusiasm for engaging with the community (volunteers, community groups, middle and high school students).
One to two years of experience with outdoor work AND/OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
