Wastewater/Water Treatment Plant Operator - Collection/Distribution System
This position functions within the Facility Management Division, Utility Section, of the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. The Utility Section is comprised of multiple facilities which are located at the South Rim, Desert View, North Rim and at other small developed areas in the Park boundary. This position will accomplish Utility system installation, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair work at those locations identified herein.
Volunteer must be able to work as a Utility Systems Repairer Operator who will be assigned to operations and maintenance duties at one of the multiple Utility Section facilities located at the South Rim, Desert View, North Rim. Utility Systems Repairer Operators may be temporarily assigned to other Utility Section facilities and locations whenever staff coverage is required at those other locations. Operations and maintenance duties within the Utility Section facilities will include work in or on potable water production facilities, wastewater treatment plants, reclaim water production facilities, sewage lift stations, sewage lagoons, collection and distribution systems, bio-solids operations, meter reading, water pumping stations and water transmission pipelines depending upon the location of the assignment.
The Utility Systems Repairer Operator performs all common wastewater and water related laboratory analysis required by regulatory monitoring and for process control functions, including pH, chlorine residual, turbidity, suspended solids, volatile solids, BOD, COD, and all other laboratory analysis and methods required to properly operate the treatment systems. Maintains and calibrates the laboratory instruments such as pH meters, turbidity meters, dissolved oxygen meters, chlorine analyzers, and other equipment and meters. Performs all required work and all record keeping required by regulatory authority for the operation of a certified laboratory.
In addition, work may require: driving government passenger or 4x4 vehicles. Driving personal vehicles to work site if necessary and approved by volunteer supervisor. The volunteer must have a strong awareness of forest and desert environments.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Candidate needs to possess knowledge of the principles and objectives of wastewater and water treatment. Current state certifications in wastewater or water of grade 2 minimally. Requisite medical shots/vaccines in this industry are suggested.
Moderate physical effort is required. Some duties require sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time. Some duties may also require strenuous physical activity such as lifting and carrying heavy items.
All work is conducted in developed areas of the North and South Rims. Weather can vary from 88 F to 15 F. All work is carried out at 4600’-8,000’ in elevation.
Shared housing available. RV pads may be available. Grocery reimbursement for volunteers in park housing; up to $15 per day for a minimum of a 7-hour work-day. Volunteers bringing a 5th wheel or RV are not eligible for grocery reimbursement.
