Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is seeking a volunteer to assist biology staff with habitat management on approximately 116,000 acres of coastal wetlands and uplands. Aransas NWR is responsible for managing overwintering habitat for the Aransas-Wood Buffalo population of federally endangered whooping cranes (Grus americana). Also, Aransas NWR manages habitat for resident and overwintering waterfowl. One management tool that refuge staff uses to benefit both whooping cranes and waterfowl is moist soil management. This involves flooding up and drawing down impoundments, and mowing and disking vegetation to create optimal freshwater wetlands with abundant food sources. Refuge staff also use herbicide as another management tool to help control invasive vegetation in these areas.
Duties: The volunteer will assist with moist soil management and be required to safely operate tractors with attached disks and mowers, skidsteer with mower, and ORUV (ATV/UTV) with sprayer. Approximately 75% of the work will be completed on a tractor and 25% will be on a skidsteer/ORUV. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided by the refuge.
Qualifications: The volunteer must have successfully completed the US Fish and Wildlife Tier 1 Heavy Equipment and Off Road Utility Vehicle (ORUV) courses, as well as hold a valid state drivers license.
Time Commitment: We ask that volunteers commit to three months (90 days), but we would be happy to have you longer. Each volunteer must commit three days (24 hours) worth of work per week for an RV pad. If a couple, we can have the second individual work in our visitor services office to satisfy these work requirments.
Logistics and Things to Know: The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a hidden gem located in the center of the Texas Coastal Bend, located 45 minutes from the city of Rockport to the south, 90 minutes from the city of Corpus Christi, and 60 minutes to the city of Victoria to the north. The closest grocery stores are in Rockport, as well as medical clinics. Cell service is hit or miss on the refuge, however there are cell boosters in our buildings. Humidity and bugs are common in the summer and fall months.
