We are hiring multiple positions for the June – October time-frame only, with a three month commitment, but potentially longer if desired.
The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a hidden gem located in the center of the Texas Coastal Bend, and is the winter home for the infamous whooping crane! Located near the town of Rockport, and fifty miles north of Corpus Christi, Aransas NWR is an impressive 116,000 acres, and is a mecca for birding and fishing.
This is an exciting time here at Aransas, as we are in the process of rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Unfortunately, many of our facilities were damaged, but we now have the opportunity to reconstruct—undergoing a refuge renaissance, per se. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to work our visitor services contact station and help orient visitors
The duties of a visitor services volunteer entails: collecting fees and distributing information at our contact station (visitor center). Volunteers are also encouraged to rove the trails, but this is not mandatory.
A valid driver’s license is required.
Volunteers must be comfortable with wearing a uniform and nametag.
Volunteers must be able to pass a federal background check.
We ask that volunteers commit to three months (90 days), but we would be happy to have you longer. Each volunteer must commit three days (24 hours) worth of work per week for an RV pad.
Know Before You Go:
The spring season is fantastic for bird migrations, but in the summers the visitation at Aransas slowes down with the heat. Cell service is limited, but there are cell boosters in our building. Also, the closest grocery stores are about 45 minutes away. Couples are welcome, and partners of applicant may work in maintenece instead of visitor services, if they desite.
