Position Description: Winter - Spring Campus Host at Schoodic Institute
The Campus Host position is a volunteer for Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park’s Schoodic District located in Winter Harbor, Maine. The position is a representative of Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, located in Winter Harbor, Maine.
The purpose of this position is to provide people with an opportunity to volunteer their time to a national organization with an important vision and mission, and in return, gain a provided location of residence, in a beautiful National Park, in an apartment for the allotted time of their service. Utilities, Direct, TV, WiFi and free parking are all included during the time of service. Winter time leisure activities include hiking, biking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing in Acadia National Park’s newly developed nearby Schoodic Woods trail system. These trails are open year-round.
The Winter-Spring Campus Host will report to, and be managed by the Schoodic Institute Director of Operations and the Schoodic Institute Maintenance Manager.
Start date would be November 1, 2019 and end April 30, 2020
The campus host will reside in a comfortable apartment at Schoodic Shores and will be the primary after-hours emergency contact person for the campus.
Primary work will be in assisting the institute’s maintenance department and also helping with winter projects like basic maintenance service in the housing units… clearing drains, painting, light carpentry, etc. The maintenance department will also require the winter host to help with outdoor snow removal and help with their ongoing daily collection of recyclables & returnables.
Inspect and lock campus facilities nightly and close any open windows, doors and buildings.
The Campus Host must be able to communicate the mission and activities of SI and ANP in a friendly knowledgeable manner and must be able to operate an NPS radio or phone.
Interact with visitors on or around the institute campus and assist with a variety of events - (setup/break-down or move chairs and tables).
Pick up mail when needed and distribute posters around the community.
On occasion, may be asked to work in the welcome center doing general office work, answer phones and assist with check-ins, check-outs, group registrations, prepare materials for groups (keys, information, directions, etc.) and attend staff meetings if necessary.
Be willing to acquire supplies and do errands by driving a park vehicle to surrounding communities and businesses and assist other national park and institute divisions as needed. Must have a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
This position will begin on November 1st and end at the end of April.
The work week consists of a minimum of 32 hours per week (per individual campus host volunteer).
The Schedule will be event driven or as needed by the institute and the maintenance dept.
The Campus Host will receive 2 midweek days off within a 7 day period. Weekend work is mandatory. Additional adjustments may be made by mutual agreement.
Volunteer time sheets will be submitted to the Office Manager – and then sent to ANP headquarters at the end of each month.
In the Winter Season, the Campus Host will be largely involved in the routine maintenance of the housing facilities and assisting Schoodic Institute’s maintenance department with various campus projects to include painting, light carpentry, snow removal and other miscellaneous outdoor and indoor winter duties.
Your apartment has 2 bedrooms – one with a queen size bed and the other has 2 twin beds, there is a full kitchen with pot, pans, dishes, microwave, toaster & coffeemaker. There is a small dining area and a large living room. There is a full bathroom with towels – but please bring your own soaps and toiletries. Bed linens are provided, but you may also bring your own. You also have your own washer & dryer! There is free Direct TV and WIFI also.
HOUSING & AMENITIES Type: Other Description: An apartment is provided for volunteers with wi-fi, and Direct TV. It is required, and no pets are allowed.
