The Hopkins Mountain Fireman's Cabin is part of the Hopkins Mountain Historic District on the Monongahela National Forest of West Virginia. The historic district includes the Mountain Tower Road (Forest Service Road 139), the fire tower and the fireman's cabin, all constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935. Also on the property is a logging tramway, in use from about 1908 to the 1920s, and the Civil War Trail, used in 1863 for the rapid retreat of the 64th Virginia Battalion after the Battle of Droop Mountain. Hopkins Mountain Fireman's Cabin is close to the Blue Bend Recreation Area that offers fishing, swimming, picnicking, and hiking. Adjacent to Blue Bend Recreation Area is the Big Draft Wilderness Area. Six miles from the cabin there is access to the Greenbrier River and the Greenbrier River Trail.
The site is planned to be a rental as funds and staffing levels become available. Prior to becoming a rental, the site is a great base camp for volunteers interested in historic preservation and/or wilderness stewardship. In Fall 2019, volunteer caretakers would be assisting in the following: cleaning of the cabin interior, litter pick up and grounds keeping on the exterior of the cabin; installation of such amenities as picnic tables, lantern and fire ring. Wilderness work includes brushing of trails within the nearby Big Draft Wilderness and assisting Forest Service personnel with clearing downed trees and building rock cairns at trail intersections. Hosts will represent the Forest Service in public contact, providing information and directions, and reporting vandalism and other problems to Forest Service staff.
All necessary tools and supplies for work accomplishments will be provided by the Forest Service. The Forest Service can accept hosts that can commit to a time block of at least 2 weeks or up to 6 weeks from September 15 to October 31, 2019.
