Description
The Laramie Ranger District of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest in Wyoming is seeking a volunteer to serve as campground host June 1 through September 15. The host would be provided with a site at the Pelton Creek Campground on the beautiful Snowy Range of the Medicine Bow National Forest near Laramie, Wyoming.
The campground is at the eastern edge of the Platte River Wilderness, and has 16 sites. It is a single loop with one side running parallel to Pelton Creek among lodge pole pines. Some sites overlook the creek and a meadow. The understory is grass and the sites are fairly close together providing minimal privacy. A trailhead provides wilderness access via the Douglas Creek Trail or the Platte Ridge Trail. The campground has a 14-day stay limit. A stock unloading facility is located near the campground; however, no stock is allowed within the campground. Picnic tables, toilets, drinking water, fire grates and no refuse receptacles (pack out your own trash, leave no trace). Fishing is available in Douglas Creek.
Duties of the Host are to greet campers, provide information and assistance if needed, and clean campsites when a camper leaves (pick up litter, clean fire rings and picnic tables, etc.). Host will also keep vault toilets clean. The Host should have good people skills and be responsible and neat in appearance. The Host must be physically able to perform such tasks as performing minor maintenance, inspecting the campground, keeping simple maintenance records, monitoring area use, and occasionally filling out forms.
Host will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions. Any vandalism or other problems should be reported to Forest Service personnel. All necessary tools, supplies, and safety equipment will be provided by the Forest Service, along with appropriate training. The host should be in the campground and available to the public 4 days out of each week, plus holidays, per their volunteer agreement. Days typically needing coverage are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Service hours are 8 am to 5 pm, but Hosts may be called upon 24 hours/day if needed.
Volunteer campground hosts will receive reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses of $60/week for 24 hours. Working past the 24 hour threshhold is allowed, but reimbursement is only available for the first 24 hours of every week.
