The Laramie Ranger District of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest in Wyoming is seeking a volunteer to serve as campground host May 1 through September 15. The Host would be provided with a site at the Vedauwoo Campground on the beautiful Pole Mountain of the Medicine Bow National Forest near Laramie, Wyoming. The campground is composed of two loops, winding around boulders, slabs of rock and cliffs. Vedauwoo is considered to be a rock climbers paradise comprising of 10 square miles of weathered Sherman Granite.
There are 28 campsites with tables, fire rings, trash pick-up, and vault toilets. This area is constructed to blend in with the natural beauty of the surroundings. The vegetation is a variety of Limber pine, Engelmann spruce, Douglas fir and Aspen. The general area was once used as a hideout for outlaws. Native Americans thought playful spirits piled up the boulders. All the tent sites are walk-ins and some of them are so secluded, one might feel the "outlaw's spirit."
Duties of the Host are to greet campers, provide information and assistance if needed, and clean campsites when a camper leaves (pick up litter, clean fire rings and picnic tables, etc.). Host will also keep vault toilets clean. The Host should have good people skills and be responsible and neat in appearance. The Host must be physically able to perform such tasks as performing minor maintenance, inspecting the campground, keeping simple maintenance records, monitoring area use, and occasionally filling out forms.
Host will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions. Any vandalism or other problems should be reported to Forest Service personnel. All necessary tools, supplies, and safety equipment will be provided by the Forest Service, along with appropriate training. The host should be in the campground and available to the public 4 days out of each week, plus holidays, per their volunteer agreement.
