Join us in the spectacular Wallowa Mountains of northeast Oregon as a Campground Host in the Lostine River Corridor! This area hosts an array of recreational opportunities including, primitive and developed camping, wildlife viewing, fishing, hiking and horseback riding. The Lostine River Corridor serves as major launching point for visitors accessing the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The Eagle Cap is the largest wilderness area in Oregon – coming in at over 350,000 acres - with a variety of landscapes and routes from moderate low elevation river valleys to jagged snowcapped peaks.
This position will be responsible for maintenance and hosting all campgrounds/trailheads in the Lostine Corridor with potential duties in the Bear Creek drainage depending on interested individuals interest and capabilities. The area includes 4 trailheads, 5 developed campgrounds, 5 designated primitive camping areas, and 2 day use areas.
Duties of the Host Include:
Greet campers and visitors, provide information and assistance if needed
Good people skills are critical along with the ability to be professional in conversation and appearance
Inspect, clean and maintain campground, trailhead and day use facilities
Clean campsites (pick up litter, clean fire rings and picnic tables, etc.)
Host will also keep vault toilets clean
Collect and account for fees from fee trailheads and campgrounds
Keep records of maintenance actives, visitor contacts, area use, and fees collected
A vehicle, uniform and all tools necessary to perform the duties of this position will be provided to the host.
Schedule and Duration of Position:
This position will ideally run from early May to Labor Day - we do a degree of flexibility regarding start and end dates.
Work schedule will be roughly 40 hours a week centered around weekends when visitor use is at its highest.
Housing and Amenities:
Hosts will be based out of the historic Lostine Guard Station. This rustic two room cabin has a bedroom, living room, full kitchen and full bath. There is hot water, a propane range top stove and a propane fridge however there is no electricity and no cell service at cabin (nearest cell service can be several miles down the road depending on carrier). This position can accommodate couples or individuals however our policy states we cannot allow hosts to have pets while volunteering in this position.
