Grand Canyon National Park is looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual to work as an Associate Naturalist. We are currently accepting applications for an Associate Naturalist volunteer position in Interpretation, Desert View District.
DATES: Start date is mid-October 2018, but it is somewhat negotiable. Applicants must commit to a minimum of 16 weeks. Preferred end date is late March 2019.
DUTIES: As an Associate Naturalist in Interpretation, you will have the opportunity to research, prepare, and present interpretive programs about the rich cultural and natural history of the Grand Canyon. You will provide orientation and information at Tusayan Museum, Desert View Watchtower, and while roving Desert View Drive viewpoints, helping visitors plan a safe and enjoyable visit while protecting irreplaceable resources. Also, workig sales on a Grand Canyon Association Bookstore sales register 1-2 hours a day at Tusayan Museum is required.
SKILLS: Ability to research and present an interpretive program to an audience consisting of 5 to 75 visitors. You will receive two weeks of training on Grand Canyon cultural and natural history, preparing interpretive programs, information desk operations, and book sales operations. The volunteer that accepts this opportunity will have cleaning and snow shovelling responsibilities.
COMPENSATION: Housing is extremely limited at Grand Canyon National Park. A shared housing unit is provided for an Associate Naturalist. Shared housing consists of a private bedroom and shared communal areas. No spouse, relatives or pets are allowed in shared housing. Meal stipend of $75. per week is also provided.
AREA: Desert View is a quiet and isolated post. At Desert View there are a limited number of services that include a grocery store, a snack bar, and a gasoline station. Grand Canyon Village is 25 miles to the west and has a post office, bank, grocery store, community library, and a recreation center. Desert View is at ~7,500 feet of elevation with temperatures down to 0 degrees F and up to 5 feet of snow. Flagstaff, Arizona is 85 miles from Desert View, and has the usual amenities found in small cities. A car is required due to the isolation of the Desert View community.
