Available May to November 2017 - Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge is seeking enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to assist staff in the day to day operations of the refuge. Visitor Services volunteers staff the refuge visitor center, greet and orient visitors, answer the phone, operate a small nature store, sell/issue America the Beautiful passes, show refuge DVD, keep visitor center tidy and brochure racks filled. Resident volunteers can assist with environmental education programs, outreach, and special events. General Maintenance: Duties include but are not limited to: facilities and grounds maintenance, light painting, mowing, weeding, trimming, and equipment repairs. Ability to work with hand tools and small mowers required. Valid driver’s license required to operate government vehicles.
Some opportunities including computer access and working with children will require a federal background check which will be handled by the refuge.
We require 24 hours/week for each site, whether couple or single. Accommodations: Forsythe will provide site with full hookups and wireless internet. Washer and dryer available just a few feet away. These sites offer solitude and quiet with a beautiful view of Lily Lake. A minimum of 3 month commitment is preferred.
An estimated 250,000 visitors come to the 47,000-acre Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge each year to observe wildlife, photograph migratory birds, bike the 8-mile Refuge drive, walk the nature trails and attend educational programs. The Refuge, which spans 50 miles of southern New Jersey’s coastline, is made up of salt marsh, woodlands and freshwater habitats. The property, located in one of the Atlantic Flyway’s most active flight paths, is protected and managed to conserve the region’s biodiversity.
